Why was NeuroMoney Designed for Neurodivergent Minds?
NeuroMoney is an ADHD- and autism-friendly money visibility tool. It is being built in the UK for people in the UK, EU and USA who want simple, honest views of their spending, subscriptions and bills – without judgment or overwhelm.
Why money can feel harder when you’re neurodivergent
For many autistic, ADHD and otherwise neurodivergent people, money problems are not about being “bad with money”. They are often about how the brain processes information, time and stress. Research on neurodiversity and financial wellbeing highlights that things like maths anxiety, executive function differences and sensory overload can all affect how confidently someone engages with their finances.
Common challenges include:
- Executive function differences – Planning, prioritising and task-switching can take more energy, so things like checking statements or updating a budget are easy to avoid.
- Time-blindness and working memory issues – Due dates, renewals and “future me will sort it” plans can slip out of mind, leading to missed bills or unplanned spending.
- Sensory and cognitive overload – Busy banking apps, dense letters or jargon-heavy websites can be exhausting to parse, especially if you already feel stressed or ashamed about money.
- Impulsivity and emotional spending – For some people with ADHD, spending can become a coping strategy or a way to seek stimulation, which can clash with longer-term goals.
- Complex systems and inaccessible support – Benefits rules, forms and standard budgeting tools are often not designed with neurodivergent users in mind, so people can miss out on help or feel excluded.
Many people described in the resources we link below say the same thing: it’s not that they don’t care about money – it’s that existing systems were not built for their brains.
How NeuroMoney aims to help
NeuroMoney focuses on a small number of high-impact jobs and keeps everything else out of your way. The first version of the app centres on three pillars:
1. A cross-platform shopping list builder for your favourite products
NeuroMoney includes a cross-platform shopping list builder implementing multiple third-party retailers. You save the products you actually use in daily life – from groceries to household basics to “can’t live without” items – in one calm, central place.
At launch, NeuroMoney is designed to work with major online retailers such as Amazon, eBay and Walmart. You can:
- Build and maintain a personal catalogue of favourite products across these platforms;
- Use that catalogue as a memory-safe shopping list when you go to the supermarket or shop in person;
- Click out to buy single items online when you realise you’ve forgotten them, without re-searching from scratch.
The idea is that you don’t have to remember where you bought something, what it was called, or whether you’ve missed it on this week’s grocery run. NeuroMoney holds that information for you so you can focus on deciding what you need today.
2. Subscription tracking that reduces “surprise money”
Subscription services are easy to start and hard to remember. NeuroMoney groups your subscriptions and shows how much they cost each month or year, so you can:
- See at a glance what is still in use and what’s just draining money;
- Spot renewals before they happen, not after;
- Experiment with small changes (for example pausing one service) and see the impact.
3. Bills overview that respects limited bandwidth
Rather than expecting you to remember every due date, the app is being designed to make bills visible and predictable. The goal is to:
- Show fixed costs like rent, utilities and key payments in one simple view;
- Help you understand how much “safe-to-spend” money is left after essentials;
- Support simple systems like direct debits and gentle reminders, not constant alerts.
Design principles: low cognitive load by default
- Plain language – No jargon, no guilt-tripping. Just clear labels and explanations.
- Minimal, predictable layouts – Repeated patterns and low-cognitive visuals so your brain can learn where things are.
- Externalising memory – The app holds the numbers, dates and product details, so your brain doesn’t have to.
- Visibility over control – You stay in charge of your accounts; NeuroMoney just gives you clear context.
- Accessibility-first – Aiming to support screen readers, keyboard navigation and dark/light preferences as the app grows.
If you’re struggling with money right now
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, behind on bills or ashamed about past decisions, you’re not alone. Many neurodivergent people describe similar experiences in the articles we link below. Talking to someone and getting practical support is a strength, not a failure.
NeuroMoney is not a crisis or debt-advice service and cannot tell you what to do with your money. If you need personalised advice or urgent help with debt, please contact a trusted support organisation in your country.
